Social PR: How to Change Your World in Just Three HoursThis first month of 2017 has been quite strange, hasn’t it? Yes, 2016 ended on a pretty bizarre note, but like most of you, I was ready for a fresh start in 2017.

Yet, it seems to be shaping up to be equally, if not more, bizarre, than its predecessor.

It’s almost as if, despite a world that increasingly runs on technologies that are meant to bring us closer together, we’re hell-bent on moving farther apart.

I’m not about to launch into a political diatribe—that’s just not me. But I’ve been thinking about what I can do, as a Social PR pro, to help bridge this gap, at least in my own community; how I can start to change my world.

And for me, that means doing my utmost to share what I’ve learned about navigating the Social PR world with my colleagues and cohorts.

It means showing them how the power of community—which is at the core of Social PR—can truly help to drive real change for businesses and individuals alike.

You see, when I was just starting to explore this strange new world where social media was a “thing,” that’s what I experienced.

I experienced first-hand how my community literally helped me launch my blog, when I had zero clue as to what that took.

Or how my network and community—which grew significantly because of social media—helped save an orphaned dog from needless euthanasia.

I marveled at how community-fueled PR—what I have come to call “Social PR”—gave voice to people who didn’t have one, through no fault of their own, and created a movement far greater than the sum of its parts.

As PR pros, our job is to help build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships for our organizations with their audiences. And that means finding smart and compelling ways to share their stories.

The more we can harness social technologies to do this, the better we work, the better the communities we build, and the better our businesses and world function.

And I know this in the core of my being: when you are able to educate and empower your community to tell your story for you, it is far more powerful than if you were to shout it aloud from the top of the Empire State Building (also, that would be useless, as the wind would blow your words away).
